Humidity is a serious issue when it comes to your health and the health of your home. Changes in weather throughout the year can be the cause of high and low indoor air humidity issues. This can lead to health problems relating to respiratory infections, bacteria, mold growth and can even lead to structural damage to your home.

A hygrometer, accurately reads your homes humidity levels, some also measure temperature levels, carbon dioxide, toxic chemicals and dust in the air. Visible signs of too much humidity include fogging, condensation on windows and moisture or mold on walls, mainly damp issues.  If humidity is too low you may find dried or cracking millwork, furniture and floors or instances of static electricity.

Ideal humidity levels range from 30-50% for healthy breathing. It is good to note that a newly built home, will likely have higher humidity levels as components and materials of the home are curing, whether concrete or wood products. This will pass over the year as these components settle in the homemaking humidity easier to control.

Here are a few tips on what we focus on to achieve optimal humidity levels in our homes:

  • Ventilation of the home affects the transfer of air between indoors and out. A well-insulated home combined with a proper ventilation system has the capability to maintain and control better humidity levels. Read more about insulation and air quality in our recent #HEALTHYHOME articles.
  • On your home exterior, ensure easements and gutters are faced away from the home to protect the foundation and basement. Have your roof regularly inspected. Monitor all vents that lead outside to make sure they are not blocked and working correctly. Also check for loose shingles, cracks or deteriorating layers.
  • Reduce the amount of moisture introduced during your home-life as your new build is settling in. Include shorter showers, using less water, covering pots when cooking and reducing plant life, if necessary.
