Tarion Warranties – Protection and Peace of Mind
It’s the ultimate nightmare for someone building or renovating a home: Money paid, the work incomplete or of poor quality, and the contractor nowhere to be found. Sadly this situation is all too real. Luckily there is a way to protect yourself. A Tarion Warranty.
What is a Tarion Warranty?
In 1976 a private corporation called Tarion was established to protect the rights of new home buyers and regulate new home builders in Ontario. It does this by administering the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act, which outlines the protection to which new home purchasers are entitled.
Tarion’s mandate covers several important areas, such as:
- Licensing new home builders and vendors.
- Protecting consumers when builders fail to fulfil their warranty obligations.
- Ensuring builders/vendors abide by the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act.
- Helping to educate new home buyers about their warranty rights.
- Resolving disputes about warranty coverage.
- Investigating illegal building practices.
- Promoting high standards of new home construction.
Simply put, a Tarion warranty provides much needed oversight for you as a consumer when building or renovating a home.
It’s absolutely essential when you are building or renovating a home that the custom home builder you choose be licensed by Tarion. If they are not, choose a different contractor. The peace of mind you’ll gain from knowing you’re protected will be more than worth the effort of finding a licensed contractor.
